Sustainability

Hagland Shipping is committed to being an industry-leading partner, dedicated to minimizing our environmental impact and fostering sustainable practices.

Eco-friendly Transport Starts at Sea

When it comes to moving goods, size matters—and efficiency matters more. Our ships move 150 times more cargo than a semi-truck—powered by an engine only four times larger. Even standard coaster vessels achieve emissions (NOx and CO₂) of less than 10% per ton-mile (AER – transport work) compared to land-based transport.

Hagland Shipping remains committed to reducing emissions—both greenhouse gases and those impacting local environments. Today, 50% of our owned fleet consists of battery-hybrid vessels, and by 2027 this share will increase to 75%, positioning us as the most modern and sustainable fleet within our segment.

Emissions in Ports

Our vessels spend significant time in ports during loading and unloading of various bulk materials. Equipped with large battery systems, they operate on electric power when entering and leaving port. While docked, all onboard power consumers—including cargo handling equipment—draw energy from shore power, simultaneously recharging the batteries. This ensures zero emissions during port operations.

Emissions at Sea

An advanced SCR system reduces NOx emissions by approximately 90%, using urea as a catalyst. The main engine operates in tandem with an electric motor/generator connected to the battery system, stabilizing engine load and improving fuel efficiency. This hybrid configuration significantly lowers carbon intensity across the transport cycle.
